You will be creating a PowerPoint presentation about a building or other structure. You will use the slides in PowerPoint to identify various geometric shapes and properties in or on the structure. Also, one or two of your slides will include a brief description of your building or structure.

Consider choosing a building or structure that is part of a topic that interests you. For example, if you like medieval history, you might select a castle to study. If you like ancient history, the pyramids may interest you.

You'll need to conduct research on the Internet or other sources to find a picture or photograph of the building or structure you've chosen. A great Internet site is http://images.google.com.
In examining your building or structure, try to find as many examples of geometry as possible. Look for the following:

Types of angles: acute, obtuse, and right
Regular polygons such as equilateral triangles and squares
Other polygons such as right triangles, rectangles, and diamonds
Circles and semicircles
3-dimensional shapes such as prisms, pyramids, cones, domes, and spheres
Parallel and perpendicular lines
Symmetry including reflections, rotations, translations, and combinations

When you write your description, be sure to include:

Who designed the building or structure?
What are its dimensions?
Where is it located?
When was it constructed?

"The Games People Play"

You are to select a game that involves math and which originated in another country. You are to find out about the historical background of the game, make the game board or use other materials to play the game (for example: if the game simply needs dice, you can use mine), and teach others how to play through your information on your blog.

Avoid games that require physical action
Set aside time at home to research your game on the Internet
Be aware that many games have several different sets of rules. Choose only one.
As you research, look for the following information:

History of your game
Object of the game
Number of players
Types of playing pieces
Rules
How math is involved in your game
Any special evidence of the culture from which the game evolved

Your blog must include:

At least 3 embedded YouTube.com videos about either the culture, country, or (if you are lucky to find it) about the game itself. (We will learn in class how to embed a video.)
At least 3 links to other Internet sites that provide information about the game's history or current play
At least 3 imported pictures found from images.google.com or any other picture-finding site. Obviously, the pictures should represent the country the game comes from or the game itself.
Choose the title of your blog wisely. You cannot change it once you have picked it.
Also, most importantly, YOU MAY NOT ALLOW COMMENTS ON YOUR BLOG. I will show you in class how to choose this feature on your blog.

You will be given time during our classes together to work on your blog. However, you may spend time at home doing research or designing your blog on your own once you become familiar with the interface.

"The Purple Paper"

Hello 6th Grade Rockstars! I hope you are enjoying the beaUtiful weekend! What gorgeous weather.

So, let's discuss "the Purple Paper".

There are two columns that everyone was having trouble with. Let's go through them slowly and carefully. I don't have the paper in front of me, but I recall one of the columns being "Estimating the %". Okay, so the denominator is definitely 120, yes? You have some funky number as the numerator, correct? It makes for an ugly fraction, nothing pretty. But we want a fraction that will reduce to a benchmark fraction (remember those?) so we can get a nice, clean percent. So what you want to do is this: let's say you have a numerator of about 39. So your fraction is 39/120. Got it? Good.

But, honestly, that's NOT pretty. Agreed? So, let's round 39 to 40. Why would we do that, you might ask. Well, let's think about it. 40/120 reduces to a beautiful 4/12 (cut out the zeros...remember the "secret of the zeros"?). Then 4/12, if you divide by 4/4, you get a FABulous 1/3. Well that's a pretty benchmark. That's 0.3 repeating (I can't make the hat on blogger.com, sorry 'bout that!). Then, our percent becomes something nice like 33-1/3 %. Or, if you're not comfortable with that, you may choose to write 33.3(with a hat)%. That's just as correct.

That's what "rounding percents" is all about. Listen, in real life situations -- statistics, economics, science, measurement, etc. -- chances are that fractions aren't going to be pretty. Once in awhile, you get lucky. But, more often that not, we don't. So we should practice estimating %'s because that's going to help you in "real life", not just get you through exercises in a textbook -- which CERTAINLY isn't real life. I'll be more than happy to help you on Monday if you're still stuck, but give it a whirl. I have faith in my rockstars!

Keep enjoying the beautiful Sunday, thank the Lord for everything that you have in your life this week before Thanksgiving. You all have something in your life that the Lord has blessed you with -- especially your ability to rock out in mathematics. Keep that in your heart this week. Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
Yes, it's true. The students are allowed to use calculators for their Mathletics homework. I promise, your daughter isn't making it up :)

Example for the homework assignment:
So, if there is a base of 3 (the big number) and an exponent of 5 (the little number), it means to multiply:
3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3
If there is a base of 6 and an exponent of 2, it means to multiply:
6 x 6

Please note that this assignment is not dealing with addition, but multiplication.

Hello Fifth Graders!
Some of you have some great ideas for your "This is My Math" project. So far I have read about paintings, drawings, clay structures, and even a diorama. I did some Internet searching and found a list of unusual art materials that might be useful...and maybe will even inspire you:

aluminum cans (like an empty coffee can)
aluminum foil
wrapping paper
an empty paper towel roll
a basket
beads (maybe you have a favorite bracelet or necklace that fell apart!)
a Christmas tree ornament that is slightly broken and can't be used on the tree this year
old trading cards that your brother isn't into anymore
an old pillow case that your parents aren't using anymore
bottle caps
a brochure for a hotel, a cell phone, a vacation, any kind of paper that is heavier than white paper you would print with
post-it notes (especially lots of colored ones...)
a brown grocery bag
an empty picture frame
buttons
an old calendar
bookmarks
cardboard instead of regular paper (Staples has some super fun paper colors, as you know from hand-outs in my class!)
a cardboard box (maybe you have a pair of shoes in your closet that don't need to be kept in a box anymore?)
an old CD jewel case (remember CD's? Those things before iPods?)
What about an old CD itself? It's shiny, circular with a hole in the middle?
an empty cereal box: you can cut it open and use the inside to draw on
clothes pins
coat hangers (wire ones)
paper clips
colored comic book pages (and no, you can't have any of mine...I'm a collector...)
you could make a mobile...take your drawing to another level!
construction paper...of course!
if you're really good at drawing, visit Staples and see what kinds of paper are available to you. You'd be surprised at how many types there are: thin paper, super thick paper...it's up to you.
Tracing paper --- now that's REALLY thin!
Cotton balls or Q-Tips (don't waste the expensive ones...take a trip to the 99 cent store for that)
Broken crayons, or even crayon wrappers -- super colored stuff!
fake flowers
leaves
dried out markers you have at home that you were going to throw out
dryer sheets (you know those light papers that make your clothes smell fantastic?)
empty egg cartons
envelopes
rubber stamps (you can get those at Michaels in Staten Island or Long Island)
envelopes from junk mail your parents get in the mail
fabric from a piece of clothing you don't fit into anymore. The design might still be super funky!
felt scraps
file folders -- not that exciting, but the weight of the paper could be something you need
any boards of games you've lost all the pieces for...even the pieces themselves
do you have a package of cards that is missing a king or an ace? Using some of those might be useful
napkins -- maybe there's a nice pattern (I have Hello Kitty ones, really I do)
a newspaper -- pretty simple there, right?
glossy paper
a milk carton (obviously without the milk in it...)
a plastic lid to a can that's empty
a plastic water bottle that's empty -- nothing glass please!!
old rags in the house
ribbon -- even shoelaces that you don't use anymore
rubber bands (you know I have that crazy rubber band ball at school...)
bendy straws (they come in fun colors)
sponges (dry ones of course!)
string from just about anything!
sugar packets, even if they're full
a tissue box (empty)
tissues
tissue gift wrap paper
a toothbrush (unused please)
twigs you found on our campus or in your yard
plastic ice cream spoons (on Wednesdays at Carvel, it's 2 for 1 sundaes...yum!)
yarn
a mask from an old halloween costume

"MATHCOUNTS" Reel Math Challenge - Grade 7

Students will have the opportunity to form a team of four (our entire class) and create videos based on one of the 270 MATHCOUNTS School Handbook problems found:

"This is My Math" - Grade 5 Math and Art Project

McGraw-Hill seeks entrants for the "This is My Math" contest. The contest asks students to submit works of art expressing what math means to them. This is a competition for teachers working with their students. Only teachers may enter the contest. Only students may create the artwork. Winning students will have their artwork featured on the next elementary math program from McGraw-Hill and displayed at the new Museum of Mathematics when it opens next year in New York City. Quiz - Grade 5 - Thursday, October 6th

Hello Grade 5! I scheduled our first quiz for Friday, October 7th, but we have a half-day. We won't see each other for class at 11:30 am. So I'm moving the date to Thursday. I will announce this in class tomorrow as well.
For the quiz, you will have 10 questions. For each question, you will be given two decimal numbers (some may be whole numbers), and you will use the >, <, or = signs to show either number is greater than, less than, or equal to the other. You will have about 20 minutes to answer the 10 questions. I believe this will be enough time for you to do your best!

Here is the answer to question 6 on your worksheet. Please copy it down so you have it in your notes:

6. Summarize any pattern you see when multiplying 11 by a two-digit number.
Answer: The ones digit of the factor is the same as the ones digit of the product. The hundreds digit of the product is the same as the tens digit of the factor. The tens digit of the product is the SUM of the digits of the factor. However, if the sum is 10, put the zero in the tens place of the product, and add 1 to the hundreds digit.

There are 2 players in the game: Player 1 and Player 2. Player 1 begins the game. She chooses one of the 6 numbers. Then Player 2 chooses any of the 6 numbers (a number can be repeatedly chosen). The 2 numbers are then added together. Then Player 1 chooses another number from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. That number is added to the previous sum. The game continues with alternating players, adding the number picked to the sum, until one of the players adds last and reaches a sum of 50.

There IS a trick to the game...more like a strategy, let's say. I've been able to win almost every time (thanks 8th grade!) because of this strategy. We're going to be playing the game during the last few minutes of class to wrap up our lessons to allow students to figure out the way to win every time. Try playing it at home...first comes frustration, then recognition, then the excitement of knowing she can win every time. To me, this equals super fun!

Hello 7th Grade Parents,

It was a pleasure speaking with all of you. I'm so glad that you are excited about taking an active role in your daughter's mathematics education. Truly, I appreciate all of the support you give to them -- and to me as well! I only have them for 4 hours a week. Any other help that you give them creates a great system for us all to work together toward excellence.

I did some digging around after last night's meeting, and I want to apologize if I came off flippant about the Terra Nova grades for next week's testing days. The fact that McGraw Hill tests 7th graders on 7th grade material two weeks into the school year is unfair, yes. Is there anything I can do about it? Unfortunately, no. As for suggesting to speak with Mrs. Figaro about the issue, I certainly did not mean to sound rude or indicate that I didn't want to deal with the issue. I was just suggesting that perhaps she could explain (better than I could!) about why we administer the test when we do. I wasn't trying to be dismissive, so I do ask your forgiveness if I came off that way. I would never be dismissive about my students' education. That is not my personality, professionally or personally.

To put everyone's mind at ease, however, I did find out that the Terra Nova scores do not go to the high schools. Their seventh grade report cards are included in their high school admissions process. Ah, I breathe a sigh of relief!

I appreciate any and all comments or issues you may have about the course and the students' preparation for any standardized tests in the future. I will try my best to be on top of things -- and if I don't have the answer right away, I will make it a priority to get that answer for you.

I wanted to help you through the questions.

For questions #9 - #10, the directions say to write the word name and expanded form.

Well, we've done word form with whole numbers. We can use the same idea for decimal numbers.

Look at #9: How many wholes are there? _____

What word do we use to represent a decimal point? _____

We then have the number 70. What place does the last digit of the 70 end in? ________________

Put all the words together, and you have the answer!

For expanded form, you know this from whole numbers. Take the number apart.

I'll do #9 for you.

#9) 4.70 = 4 + 0.7 (you don't need to write anything for the zero at the end).

For the "name an equivalent decimal" at the end, we showed in class that writing a zero to the right of the last digit on the "decimal" side of the decimal point doesn't change the value.

(Look in your notes. 0.2 = 0.20)

So how do you think you can complete #11 through 13? Look at it as a challenge!

Parents: Read section 013 in the Math At Hand book. (Ignore the chart at the bottom of the page.) Also, sections 014 and 015 are helpful.

Quiz tomorrow - 10 questions. You will be given 10 numbers, and you will have to write all of the categories that the number belongs to. For example, the number (-1) belongs to the sets of Integers, Rational Numbers, and Real Numbers. It doesn't belong to the set of whole numbers because the first whole number is 0, and it doesn't belong to the set of counting/natural numbers because the first counting/natural number is 1. Remember: (a) ALL numbers are Real Numbers, (b) A number CANNOT be both Rational and Irrational at the same time.

It was so wonderful to see you today...either at the front door or in class! I have such high hopes for this coming school year. I think it will be a fabulous one.

Dearest Parents,

There is an option on the blog (I had no idea about this, but it was brought to my attention) to become a "follower". I assume you receive an email every time I post a new blog posting. This might be a helpful way for us to keep in communication in a more efficient way. Your name does not appear on the website, or the blog, but I believe you will be kept in the loop as far as new information that I post. (As you can see, I post quite a bit...and it's only August 5th!)

Please join the followers if you are comfortable with that. I would love to stay in touch in such a quick, easy way. If you're not comfortable with that, just check in every night. I'm sure you'll find another posting about homework, tests, projects, what we did in class, etc. Especially for the 5th grade. Middle school is a HUGE adjustment, so I'll be posting about our classes the most. Also, I'll be posting for the 8th grade, since they will be taking the Regents Exam in June 2012. Seems far away, but believe me -- getting through the curriculum is a difficult task, but definitely doable. We did it last year -- I have faith in this year's group as well!

Hello superstars! I hope you're having a blast this summer.

I've been having trouble logging onto Mathletics.com, which leads me to believe that you might be experiencing the same problem. I'm going to continue trying, BUT:

If this continues throughout August, then we will hold off on the third 10-item assignment until September. (What else can we do?) Now, for those who CAN get on, this is not a free pass. You are required to complete the assignment. Besides, do you really want to cram it in when you get back to school? Doubt it highly.

For those who did NOT complete the second 10-item assignment, and if I get logged in, you will not be allowed to go back and complete those 10 items. Those should have been completed long before the due date anyway.

So keep trying, as I will.

Hello little stars!

I'm watching the FIFA Women's World Cup between Japan and America. It's so exciting! I hope you're watching it too!

Live @ 5:18 pm, Sunday the 17th:
Right now it's the kick-off after a tie (2, 2). America didn't get it. Japan is up. Japan got it. I think it's the best of 5. Oh boy. America kicked it over the net. Oh dear. Japan missed it. Okay. America missed again. None out of three for USA. Japan got it in the net. Rrrrr! America has to score. They do, still in it. If Japan scores again, they win. Japan wins. God bless them. But the USA women made it this far. God bless them as well!!

It seems as though a soccer field is waaaaaay bigger (wider and longer) as I watched the game. So I investigated. Check out these links that I found about the dimensions (that means the length and width) of both soccer and football fields. I was surprised:

When you consider the length of a football field, it's 120 yds, which seems longer than a soccer field. But you have to take into account the 10 yd end zone on each end for each team (which adds up to 20 extra yards). So a soccer field and a football field are the same length. I thought the widths of the fields were much different. Check out the links above and discover the difference of the widths.

What do you think makes the soccer field look so much different than a football field? Any suggestions?

Also, the Mathletics first deadline is over. If you haven't finished the first round, you may not complete it. You will now be assigned the second assignment.

A fun summer project!

Okay, so this doesn't have much to do with mathematics, BUT...it looks like super fun! It's going be crazy hot and humid over the next couple of days, so maybe staying inside and doing some arts and crafts might be fun for you!

Note: You need to use some tools that you must use with adult supervision. But working with your parents or older siblings always builds a great relationship.

Grade 5 -- We're going to be making bracelets as part of a lesson about equations in our course, so this would be a great practice section. I would love to take a trip to Michael's and grab the tools for this project and make the button necklaces myself. I just might...

Bought the TI-84 Plus Today

Hello 7th and 8th Graders!

So I went to Staples and plunked down the $119.99 for the TI-84 Plus (not the Silver Edition). I read through the entire "Getting Started Guide". Took me about 15 minutes...I HIGHLY suggest that before you come to class in September that you give this guide a run-through. We'll be going through how to use the calculator in the first couple of classes. (7th graders, don't worry if you don't want to purchase this calculator this summer. You can just follow along...don't feel bad!)

Then I plugged in the USB cable to my laptop and my calculator. DON'T LOSE THE CABLE! I went to education.ti.com and created a profile for myself (this is necessary in order to update your calculator during the year).

The entire User Guide is on this website. You can take a look at it, but we'll be going through it in class, so I wouldn't waste time on that. Just check out the Getting Started Guide that comes in the package. Go to "Downloads and Activities" at the top menu, and click on "Apps, Software, and Updates." The menu should have a choice for "Graphing Calculators". Click on that one.

There is also a program called "TI Connect" that you need to download to your computer/laptop. I don't know if this works for an iPad. Give it a go if you have one. It's super cool...I'll show you about it if you bring your laptop to class. Anyway...

There are many activities available on education.ti.com, but I don't think the Mac OS X supports many of the applications, etc., because the apps were written around 2001 - 2004.

I will look for other websites that have activities for us to "play with". For now, just get "TI Connect" downloaded on your computer. It works for my Mac, and I'm sure it works with Windows 7.

The Texas Instrument Calculator

Hello ladies! Whew, warm out there!

I did a bit of research, and here are the differences between the TI calculators:

TI-83 Plus: does not use "Math Print" which includes ways to show "stacked" fractions, for example, you wouldn't have to write two-thirds as 2 division symbol 3

TI-84 Plus: DOES include "Math Print"

TI-84 Plus Silver Edition: the only cool thing that this has is SAT prep questions included on it.

I would personally go with the middle one, the TI-84 Plus. It's got everything you need. I have to buy a new one myself this year to catch up with the technology.

I've been combing the Internet for coupons, but to no avail. I'll keep you updated!

But mailing the book to you seems to be the least trouble, no?

AND...if you wish to have a copy for yourself at home (as in an extra copy), PLEASE don't buy one from Amazon or such.
We have so many copies at school that we could provide you with an extra copy when you come back in September. So sorry for the mix-up. I didn't know how to get the book to each student without announcing in front of the homeroom class who made it into the Advanced Program or not. Many apologies on my poor planning!
